Talks 2024

October 24th 2024 Luke Barrington, Google

Luke Barrington from Google talked about ‘Weather Applications of Machine Learning at Google’.

The AI revolution arrived in weather forecasting. Machine Learning models show state of the art performance compared to the supercomputer simulations relied on by meteorologists for decades. In this easy to follow talk, Luke discuss the development of these innovations from research breakthroughs into real world weather applications in Google’s products and beyond.

September 19th 2024 Thomas Rieutord Met Éireann

Numerical weather prediction is on the verge of a revolution due to artificial intelligence (AI). Historically, weather forecasts have been made (and are still made this way) by solving physics-based equations on larger and larger grids. Over the last two years, breakthrough works have given evidence that weather forecasts could also be made based purely on available data, using AI. This presentation gave an introduction to how these AIs work and a screenshot of the fast-changing state of the art in this field.

July 6th 2024 Ciaran Doolin from Te Ratonga Tirorangi – Meteorological Service of New Zealand , gave a super talk on the connections between New Zealand and the Bergen School of Meteorology in Bergen, Norway, which led to the production of the first synoptic weather charts in the Southern Hemisphere.

June 2024 Dr Stephen Burt spoke on reanalysis of some of the major Irish storms of the 19th and 20 century, including the Ulysses storm of 1903 and the ‘Night of the Big Wind’

February 2024 Emma Markey from Met Éireann and David O’Connor from DCU spoke on Modelling and Monitoring of Pollen in Ireland
